Our Flagship Property · Built 1942
3 Bedrooms · 3 Bathrooms · Up to 6 Guests
The Ohana Plantation House is available for a minimum 4-night stay — ideal for family reunions, milestone celebrations, and multi-family getaways.
Built in 1942 using lumber salvaged from dismantled WWII supply ships, the Ohana House is steeped in the authentic history of Kauai. Originally constructed for a Japanese widow and her two children, this remarkable property survived the war era and went on to become the cornerstone of what is now Fern Grotto Inn.
Today, the Ohana House is a beautifully restored 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home — our largest and most sought-after rental. It retains its original plantation-era materials and character while offering every modern comfort, including full air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private outdoor space with a gas grill.
Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and only a block from the beach, the Ohana House is ideal for families, honeymooners seeking extra space, or any group wanting an authentic Hawaiian home base. You simply won't find a place like this anywhere else on Kauai.
The Ohana House was built in 1942 from lumber salvaged from dismantled WWII supply ships — a piece of Kauai history that has outlasted nearly everything built around it. The bones of this place are remarkable: the proportions, the joinery, the way the light moves through the rooms at different times of day. We've restored it carefully, adding every modern comfort while leaving its character intact.
Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining table that seats eight, a full kitchen, and a yard with a gas grill. It's the only property on the grounds that genuinely accommodates a group — families, multi-generational reunions, groups of friends who want their own space but want to share meals and evenings together. The Wailua River is steps away.
The Ohana House has a 4-night minimum stay. For groups who need more than two guests, it's the only option on the property — and consistently the one guests describe as a once-in-a-lifetime Kauai experience.
Families with children — three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a full kitchen means everyone has space and no one is waiting for the shower. The yard gives kids room to move.
Multi-generational groups — grandparents, parents, and grandchildren have stayed here together. The dining room for eight means everyone eats at the same table.
Milestone celebrations — anniversaries, reunions, significant birthdays. The Ohana House has hosted all of them. There's no better backdrop on Kauai for a group that wants to be together in a place that actually feels like something.
Lydgate Beach Park is a 15-minute walk — one of the safest swimming beaches on Kauai, with a protected keiki (children's) pool that makes it ideal for families. The Wailua River is on the property; the included kayaks give the whole group access to Secret Falls without booking a tour. The Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal bike path runs nearby, and four complimentary bicycles come with every stay.

"We brought three families together for a Kauai reunion and the Ohana House was absolutely perfect. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a full kitchen meant we could spread out and actually cook together. The kayaks were a huge hit with the kids — we paddled to Secret Falls and it was the highlight of the whole trip."
"Perfect for our extended family trip. The house is true to its plantation character with every modern comfort you need. Paul was incredibly responsive when we had questions. Wailua Beach is a one-block walk and the Wailua River is practically in your backyard — the included kayaks made every morning an adventure."
"We've stayed at many vacation rentals and this one stands out. The Ohana House is spacious, beautifully kept, and the location makes it easy to see all of Kauai. Having the gear included — kayaks, bikes, snorkel sets — saved us a fortune and made the stay feel like exceptional value."
