Tucked into the lush tropical gardens of Fern Grotto Inn, the River Cottage is a charming studio hideaway just steps from the Wailua River. It’s not your ordinary rental — this is a place designed for two, and one of our most-requested cottages for honeymoons and anniversaries. Waking up slow and staying in feels just as good as everything Kauai has to offer outside.

The cottage looks out over private garden greenery, with the sounds of the river drifting in through the windows. Step outside and the kayaks and paddleboards are right there. The beach is a block away. And when you’re ready to come back and close the door on the world for a while — the Tantra Chair is waiting. It’s become something of a signature for couples who stay here.

River Cottage sits at the far end of the property — the most private spot on the grounds. A deliberate walk from the parking area, past the garden, past the other cottages, until you reach a door that feels like it belongs to you alone. Inside, the four-poster king bed anchors a space that's small in the best way — intimate without feeling cramped, with every inch considered. The 1940s plantation bones are still here: the proportions, the materials, the unhurried feeling of a place that was built to last.

Outside your door is a private lanai facing the garden. No road noise. No neighbors visible. Just birdsong, the occasional rustle of palms, and — if the wind is right — the sound of the Wailua River drifting through. The Tantra Chair next to the bed has become something of a legend among couples who've stayed here; you'll understand why within the first hour.

River Cottage guests are a 15-minute walk from Lydgate Beach Park and Wailua Beach — two of Kauai's most family-friendly beaches, with calm protected swimming areas. The Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal bike path starts nearby; the complimentary bikes make a sunrise ride along the coast a natural part of any stay. Secret Falls — Kauai's most beloved kayak-and-hike — launches from the Wailua River, right off the property.
