About Ohana House

Built in 1942 using lumber salvaged from dismantled WWII supply ships, the Ohana House is steeped in the authentic history of Kauai. Originally constructed for a Japanese widow and her two children, this remarkable property survived the war era and went on to become the cornerstone of what is now Fern Grotto Inn.

Today, the Ohana House is a beautifully restored 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home — our largest and most sought-after rental. It retains its original plantation-era materials and character while offering every modern comfort, including full air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private outdoor space with a gas grill.

Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and only a block from the beach, the Ohana House is ideal for families, honeymooners seeking extra space, or any group wanting an authentic Hawaiian home base. You simply won't find a place like this anywhere else on Kauai.

What Guests Say

"We brought three families together for a Kauai reunion and the Ohana House was absolutely perfect. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a full kitchen meant we could spread out and actually cook together. The kayaks were a huge hit with the kids — we paddled to Secret Falls and it was the highlight of the whole trip."

"Perfect for our extended family trip. The house is true to its plantation character with every modern comfort you need. Paul was incredibly responsive when we had questions. Wailua Beach is a one-block walk and the Wailua River is practically in your backyard — the included kayaks made every morning an adventure."

"We've stayed at many vacation rentals and this one stands out. The Ohana House is spacious, beautifully kept, and the location makes it easy to see all of Kauai. Having the gear included — kayaks, bikes, snorkel sets — saved us a fortune and made the stay feel like exceptional value."
